History of Giving
Since its inception in 1978, the Tau Lambda Chapter Education Foundation of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity considers it a privilege to provide financial support to assist deserving students. Over the years, generous donations have helped in creating significant support through scholarships. Gifts from donors have allowed the foundation to enrich educational opportunities for students in the Metropolitan Nashville School District. The Foundation has assisted local Boy Scout and Cub Scout units; contributed to the scholarship funds of Fisk University, Tennessee State University, and to the United Negro College Fund (UNCF). In 1999, the foundation established a $10,000 Tuition Assistance Scholarship Endowment Fund at Fisk University, and in 2003, the foundation helped to establish a $25,000 Tuition Assistance Scholarship Endowment Fund at Tennessee State University. The Foundation also supports the chapter’s Youth Concerns Program, a multi-faceted structure that hosts group meetings with teens on a variety of social issues to emphasize the importance of education, leadership and social and cultural development. Scholarships create the financial support needed to pursue a college education, and to create a more secure financial future for the recipients.
To promote education and educational, literary, artistic, scientific activities of the Fraternity; to specifically identify worthy and able young people in high school or college who show potential and are recognized by the Fraternity for their potential or achievement; to establish and support scholarships and leadership training programs which promote academic achievement and to strengthen moral, social, and community values.
The Tau Lambda Education Foundation is the 501 (C) (3) non-profit charitable arm of the Fraternity, which means that all gifts to the Foundation are tax-exempt to the fullest extent allowed by law. It focuses on scholarship programs, and the training and development of youth in the community, and the membership. The Education Foundation supports and implements the Fraternity’s national initiatives – “Go-to High School, Go-to-College” and “From High Chair to Higher Education.” The financial burden of a college education continues to increase dramatically. The Tau Lambda Education Foundation provides financial assistance to help off-set the ever increasing educational expenses for students at colleges and universities.
